Jonathan Thomas kept deleting text messages from Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, believing their digital wedding invitations were spam.
The CEO of American Century Investments shared the story during a recent appearance on the podcast “The Compound and Friends,” providing one of the most detailed accounts yet of the unusual steps Swift and Kelsey took to protect the privacy of their July 3 wedding at Madison Square Garden.
About an hour and 19 minutes after the conversation began, Thomas recalled receiving repeated text messages that read, “This is from Taylor and Travis. I promise this is not spam.”
He was convinced they were fake and deleted them. Eventually he blocked the number completely.
A few weeks later, Kelce called him personally.
“Hey, JT,” Thomas recalled telling Kelce. “You seem to be the only one who hasn’t responded to the wedding invitation. What’s going on?”
Thomas explained that he never received an invitation.
“Jonathan, we’ve been texting every couple of days and we haven’t heard back,” Kelce replied.
This unusual invitation was just the beginning of a thorough security process. Thomas said guests first completed multi-factor authentication and then signed non-disclosure agreements through DocuSign. Only then did I receive a personalized digital invitation with the guest’s name as a watermark so I could track the screenshot. Even after accepting the invitation, participants only learned the details in stages, first the date, then New York City, then Manhattan, and so on. The exact location, Madison Square Garden, was not revealed until around 4 a.m. on the day of the wedding.
“I won’t go into the details of the NDA,” Thomas said. “But it had teeth.”
The strategy seems to have worked. Despite drawing around 1,000 guests from the worlds of entertainment, sports and business, the ceremony was kept largely secret and no photos were leaked.
Country star Brad Paisley, who attended with his wife Kimberly Williams-Paisley, described a similarly controlled invitation process in an interview with The Associated Press.
“They were very clear about the invitation,” Paisley said. “If you get this, you mean a lot to us.”
He said he watched a “game of cat and mouse” unfold as organizers gradually revealed details leading up to the ceremony, later calling it “one of the most casual weddings I’ve ever seen.”
Another attendee, AMC CEO Adam Aaron, also gave a glimpse inside a lengthy post about X before quickly deleting it. Aaron said Madison Square Garden was transformed into an intimate garden covered in peaches, white and greenery, and childhood photos of the bride and groom were displayed everywhere, making it almost unrecognizable. He praised the ceremony’s focus on the couple’s love story and highlighted that Swift and Kelsey made a $26 million charitable donation over their wedding weekend.
