July 15th is National Orange Chicken Day, and Panda Express is celebrating by bringing back a fan-favorite.
The fast-casual restaurant chain announced that Hot Orange Chicken will be returning to all restaurants nationwide for a limited time starting July 11 while supplies last.
The chain says Hot Orange Chicken, created by chef Andy Kao at Hawaii Panda Express locations in 1987, is the best-selling limited-time menu item in the chain’s history. The company says more than a third of Panda Express customers include orange chicken in their meals.
“Orange Chicken is the dish that made us famous, and National Orange Chicken Day is proof that it has taken on a life of its own,” Evelyn Waugh, vice president of brand innovation at Panda Express, said in a news release. “We felt it was only right to celebrate with Hot Orange Chicken because our guests never let us forget how much this dish meant to them, and this is what we showed up for.”
Customers excited about the return of hot orange chicken
The chain says the Hot Orange Chicken uses the same signature orange sauce as the Original Orange Chicken, but is spiced up with six times more crushed chili peppers and half a cup of dried chili peppers, the same ingredients used in the chain’s Kung Pao Chicken.
According to Panda Express, there is no extra charge for orange chicken and it is priced the same as other entrees on the menu.
Panda Express made the announcement on TikTok and was flooded with comments from customers who clearly love hot orange chicken. One user said, “Ah, I’ve been waiting centuries,” while another said, “Deep down I’m going to play the fool!” Another user chimed in: “Great news.”
