According to the National Foundation Day Calendar website, like many fictional holidays, there is no origin for July 6th being designated as Fried Chicken Day.
But in reality, fried chicken is one of America’s most beloved foods, ranking only behind cheeseburgers, hamburgers and grilled cheese sandwiches as the country’s favorite entrees in YouGov’s regularly updated rankings of the most popular American dishes. By the way, another deep-fried food, French fries, tops the list.
According to the National Poultry Council, Americans’ consumption of chicken meat has increased 39% since 2000, to an estimated average of 107.6 pounds per person. During this period, total red meat consumption (including beef, pork, mutton, and lamb) decreased by about 7% to 110.8 pounds.
