Ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, ConAir announced it is recalling about 2 million wire grill brushes because the metal bristles can peel off, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Eight different Cuisinart models are affected by the recall, some of which have been sold nationwide since 2009. The CPSC said some of the hairs could get caught on grill grates and end up in human food, “posing a risk of ingestion and a risk of serious internal organ injury that may require surgery.”

The 1,719,995 recalled brushes were sold online through Amazon and the Cuisinart website, as well as in-person at Burlington, TJ Maxx and Ross stores, the CPSC said.

According to the recall notice, Conair is aware of at least 54 reports and reviews that claim the brush bristles came off, and three people reported swallowing the metal bristles.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled grill brushes and contact Conair for a full refund or receive a credit to use on Cuisinart.com for a full refund plus 20% of the refund amount. Consumers are asked to discard the recalled grill brushes,” the CPSC said.
