Officials in Maryland’s Black coastal town of Eagle Harbor reflect on its rich history and heritage ahead of Juneteenth.
Juneteenth is here and consumers have plenty of shopping and dining options on Friday, whether they want to get some last-minute errands done before the weekend or want to go out to dinner.
Most retail stores, grocery stores and restaurant chains nationwide will be open on the holiday, but banks and post offices will be closed. The stock market will be closed on June 1st as it is a federal holiday.
Juneteenth, also known as America’s Second Independence Day, is a fixed-date holiday, always falling on June 19th. This year’s public holiday falls on Friday.
The holiday commemorates the day in 1865, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, when Major General Gordon Granger led 2,000 Union troops to Galveston Bay, Texas, and declared the state’s more than 250,000 enslaved black people free.

When is Juneteenth in 2026?
Juneteenth is always celebrated on June 19th. This year, that day will be Friday.
Will banks, post offices, UPS, and FedEx be open on June 1st? Will my mail be delivered?
- Juneteenth is USPS According to the department’s website, no mail will be delivered on June 19 and the post office will be closed for retail transactions.
- UPS and FedEx Pick-up and delivery service will be available from June 1st. According to the company’s website, UPS Store locations will remain open, as will FedEx Office locations.
- June 19th is a federal holiday, so most bank branches will be closed. Consumers should check with their local bank branch for specific holiday hours.
Is the stock market open on Juneteenth?
The U.S. stock market will be closed on Friday, June 19th in observance of Juneteenth.
The Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchanges will be closed on Friday and will reopen on Monday, June 22, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. The US bond market will also be closed on June 19th.
Are grocery stores open on Juneteenth?
Most grocery chains will be open with regular business hours on June 19th. Kroger says on its website that stores will operate as usual. However, pharmacy and clinic hours may vary.
Other grocery stores such as Walmart, Food Lion, Trader Joe’s, Meijer, Publix, and Whole Foods are traditionally open on Juneteenth. We recommend checking with your local store for specific holiday hours.
As for wholesale clubs, Sam’s Club, Costco and BJ’s Warehouse will all be open for business on Juneteenth, according to their website.
Are restaurants open on Juneteenth?
Most restaurant chains will remain open on Juneteenth, including McDonald’s, Starbucks, Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin’ and Wendy’s.
