Juneteenth is approaching. If you need to mail a package or perform a banking transaction, consider planning ahead.

That’s because most national banks and the U.S. Postal Service will be closed on Friday, June 19, due to the federal holiday.

Juneteenth, known as America’s second Independence Day, will be commemorated as a federally recognized holiday starting in 2021, giving millions of Americans a paid holiday and an opportunity to commemorate the end of slavery.

The holiday commemorates the day in 1865, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, when Major General Gordon Granger led 2,000 Union troops to Galveston Bay, Texas, and declared the state’s more than 250,000 enslaved black people free.

Here’s what you need to know about banks, post offices and delivery services and whether they’ll be open on June 11, 2026.

When is Juneteenth in 2026?

Juneteenth is always celebrated on June 19th. This year, that day will be Friday.

Will the post office be open on June 1st? Will my mail be delivered?

Are banks open on Juneteenth?

Because June 19th is a federal holiday, most branches of national banks, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citibank, will be closed on June 19th.

We recommend checking with your local bank branch for specific holiday hours.
