Bonnie Tyler wakes up after month-long coma ‘very unwell’

Date:

A month after being placed in an induced coma, Grammy-nominated singer Bonnie Tyler’s team has shared an update on her health.

The 75-year-old “Total Eclipse of the Heart” songstress is “no longer in a coma, but remains unwell and is in intensive care at a hospital in Portugal,” her publicist said in a website update on June 15.

“Her condition is improving, but the process is slow,” the statement continued. “Doctors are confident she will recover well, but it will take time.”

On May 8, Tyler’s team told fans that she had been “placed in an induced coma by doctors to aid her recovery” after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery.

Bonnie Tyler’s 2026 Summer Concerts Canceled, Postponed

The “Holding Out for a Hero” singer was originally scheduled to perform a series of international shows through December. However, her team confirmed in an update on June 15 that previously scheduled concerts have been canceled or postponed until next year, and she will not be able to take the stage for the next few months.

“This affects all current shows until the end of August. At this time, we are still hopeful that fall shows will take place,” her team wrote. “We apologize to Bonnie’s fans and promoter partners for any disappointment this may cause, and we hope that they will understand and cooperate with us in this difficult situation. We look forward to seeing you next year in their place.”

“We are aware of your kindness and are very grateful,” Tyler added in the statement.

Before her recent health problems, Tyler told British magazine Hello! In an interview posted on March 2, she said she is “well enough at the moment” and “really enjoying the show.”

“I’m still rocking on that stage with a great band. As long as I’m healthy, I can have it all,” she told the magazine.

Since breaking out in the late 1970s with “It’s a Heartache” and “Lost in France,” Tyler has produced radio hits such as “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which spent four weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 after its release in July 1983.

Her most recent releases are the songs “One World One Home” and “Only Love,” written for the documentary “Homeless,” both released in April.

In 2023, the Welsh singer, real name Gaynor Sullivan, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to music at a ceremony at Windsor Castle.
