Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was hospitalized on June 14, but his office did not immediately confirm why he needed treatment.

“Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning,” McConnell spokesman David Popp told reporters. “He is receiving excellent treatment.”

One of the most influential American politicians in modern history, McConnell first entered the Senate in 1984 and served as Senate Republican leader from 2007 to 2024, before being succeeded by Sen. John Thune of South Dakota.

The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican announced last February that he would retire at the end of his term in 2027.

McConnell has struggled with public health issues in recent years. He froze up while talking to reporters during two incidents in 2023, fell down multiple times, and even used a wheelchair as a precaution.

Before announcing his retirement last year, McConnell was admitted to the hospital on February 2nd “after experiencing flu-like symptoms.”
