‘Cape Fear’ star Javier Bardem’s pinky finger is broken and he makes a cameo appearance on the show
Javier Bardem’s injured pinky finger makes a cameo appearance as Max Cady’s broken finger in Cape Fear. How he broke it off filming a movie 30 years ago.
Warning: Contains spoilers for episode 3 of Apple TV+ “Cape Fear,” now streaming.
Juliette Lewis returns in Cape Fear, 35 years after the 1991 film.
Lewis, 53, who received an Oscar nomination for his sensational portrayal of Daniel Borden in Martin Scorsese’s 1991 Cape Fear, was revealed to be making a surprise cameo at the end of episode 3 of the Apple TV+ revival series on June 13.
In the new series, Lewis will play a mysterious stranger who harasses the story’s supposed villain, Max Cady (Javier Bardem).
It’s a full-circle moment for Lewis, who was 18 when she made “Cape Fear,” the movie that catapulted the young actress to stardom. In the 1991 film, Daniel Borden, who plays Lewis, is harassed and groomed by ex-convict Max Cady (Robert De Niro) as part of Cady’s terrorist campaign against former lawyer Sam Borden (Nick Nolte).
In the film, Cady also poisons her dog, Benjamin. The entire family survived the ordeal with Cady drowning. Justice for Benjamin.
Who is Juliette Lewis’ new character in ‘Cape Fear’?
Lewis’ mysterious “Cape Fear” character appears in the Apple TV+ series wearing a rain jacket and mask (and, for some reason, cowboy boots). In episode 3, Cady watches a videotape that reveals Lewis to be a provocative and menacing character.
“Hey Max, I heard you left,” the character says on the recording before launching into the song. “What do they know about love?”
While watching a woman sing, Cady discovers a dog collar left behind by the person. The woman on the screen sings an unforgettable song using a dog collar. It’s so annoying when the caddy breaks the TV.
Will the Apple TV+ character be the elderly Daniel Borden seeking revenge for his dead dog in 1991’s ‘Cape Fear’? Creator and showrunner Nick Antosca told USA TODAY that Lewis’ TV character is not Daniel Borden and that his true identity has nothing to do with the previous films.
“Juliet is playing a whole new character in this version,” Antosca said. “Early on in making this, we asked, ‘What if Max Cady had his own stalker?'”
The cameo is part of the legacy of “Cape Fear,” a film based on John D. Macdonald’s 1957 novel “The Executioner.” The 1962 film version featured the immortal lineup of Gregory Peck as lawyer Sam Borden and Robert Mitchum as ex-con Max Cady. The two Hollywood legends appeared in completely different roles in the 1991 version.
Mitchum played Lt. Elgart, who advises Nolte’s character about Cady. In his final film role, Peck played Lee Heller, Cady’s slimy defense attorney.
Lewis guest-starred in Hulu’s 2019 full-fledged crime drama “The Act,” which Antosca co-produced and co-showrun.
“I had just started adapting Cape Fear when I was on set with Juliette, and I thought she was amazing,” says Antosca. “It took us years to put this show together, but we always knew we wanted Juliette Lewis to be a part of it.”
Nolte and Jessica Lange, who played his on-screen wife Lee Borden in 1991, do not appear in the television series.
