Apple users will soon have more control over how liquid glass designs appear on their devices.
On Monday, June 8, during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote, Apple announced that users will now be able to further customize the Liquid Glass interface that the company introduced last year.
In iOS 27, the new software Apple announced at the conference, the default liquid glass interface will further diffuse background content and create more depth for foreground content, Shubham Kedia, Apple’s director of human interfaces, said in a presentation.
As part of the update, users of iOS 27, which rolls out this fall, will be able to use a new slider scale in the Settings app that ranges from “ultra clear” to “fully tinted,” Kedia explained. So users who prefer liquid glass can see it more clearly, and users who prefer the old Apple interface can get something closer to what they’re used to.
In addition to enhanced user control, Liquid Glass also extends to app design. In iOS 27, each Apple app has a liquid glass appearance.
What is liquid glass?
Introduced at WWDC in 2025, Liquid Glass is a translucent feature that reflects and refracts its surroundings like glass, and, according to Apple, “dynamically transforms into Hep to draw attention to your content.”
The liquid glass interface interacts with Apple product buttons, sliders, text, media controls, tab bars, and app navigation.
When will the new liquid glass update be available?
The new customizable liquid glass interface is now available in iOS 27, with public beta in July and general availability later this fall.
Reactions to liquid glass design
When Liquid Glass was launched, some Apple users embraced it, while others expressed distaste for the new design. More notable concerns were about the readability of notifications and the distortion of images behind the undulating, bubble-like app outlines.
“The new liquid glass looks terrible and is a perfect example of the focus on form, cuteness, and design over functionality, legibility, and practicality. What are you doing here?” one X user wrote in a June 2025 post.
Some thought the new design could not have surpassed that of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
“Steve Jobs very famously said that design isn’t about how it looks, it’s about how it works… His thoughts on liquid glass would have been interesting,” wrote one X user, citing the founder’s famous quote.
