Tears were shed when St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lars Nortvaar was surprised by his mother on live television.
The New York Yankees announced on Thursday, June 4, that Aaron Judge will be sidelined at least until the All-Star break after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right first rib.
Judge, a three-time American League MVP, has undergone significant testing since his last appearance in a game on May 31st. The club announced on Thursday that his test results would be reviewed by a thoracic outlet syndrome specialist, and the announcement of a rib fracture came hours later.
The Yankees announced that Judge’s injury will require a period of “rest and limited activity,” and that Judge will undergo re-examination in four to six weeks. The only timeline the club offered was that Judge was “expected to return sometime this season.”
It’s unclear whether the stress fracture will ultimately require rib removal, and Judge will likely miss the remainder of the season if surgery is required. Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler was diagnosed with airborne TOS and had his ribs removed last September. He did not pitch in a regular season game until April 25.
Judge, 34, led the majors last season with a batting average of .331, an on-base percentage of .457, and a slugging percentage of .688, hitting 53 home runs and winning his second straight AL MVP award. He got off to a similarly strong start this season, hitting 17 home runs in 59 games, but his .907 OPS (while still elite) is nowhere near his 1.144 pace in 2025.
Negative judge: The Yankees lost two of three games to the Cleveland Guardians. They started Jose Caballero in right field for the first two games of the series, but then moved Caballero to shortstop, benched Anthony Volpe, and started Max Schumann in right field. It’s virtually impossible to replace Judge, and the severity of Judge’s injury and length of his absence could determine how much offensive reinforcements are sought before the August trade deadline.
New York enters the weekend with a 37-25 record, half a game behind Tampa Bay in the AL East.
