Something you purchased has been recalled. What does that mean?
What happens if something you purchase is recalled? Is it voluntary or mandatory? And what does it mean for you?
Salmonella recalls are on the rise across the country, and foods sold at popular retailers like Costco, Walmart and Kroger are being added to the list.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued its first notification on April 20 regarding a powdered milk product manufactured and sold by California Dairies that may be contaminated with salmonella. The Food Safety and Inspection Service of the Department of Agriculture subsequently issued a second notification on April 30th.
Officials said that as the recall is processed, more foods made using powdered milk will be gradually added.
The original list included frozen pizzas sold at Aldi stores nationwide, but has since expanded to include items sold at retailers such as Walmart, Target, QVC and Williams-Sonoma. This recall also includes popular stores such as Kroger, Publix, and Costco.
Below is the complete list of products affected by the recall as of June 1, according to the FDA and FSIS.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning
Symptoms of salmonella poisoning usually begin 6 hours to 6 days after swallowing the bacteria. According to the CDC, the most common symptoms are diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain.
Most healthy people recover in four to seven days without treatment, but some vulnerable groups, such as children under 5, adults over 65, and people with weakened immune systems, can develop more severe illness that requires treatment and hospitalization.
If you experience any of these more serious symptoms, the CDC recommends contacting your health care professional.
- Diarrhea and fever of 102 degrees or higher
- Diarrhea does not improve even if it continues for more than 3 days
- bloody diarrhea
- I’m vomiting so much that I can’t keep fluids down
- Signs of dehydration such as not producing much urine, dry mouth or throat, and feeling dizzy when standing up
