Dennis Quaid is asking his ex-wife Kimberly Buffington to stop paying child support now that their twins have graduated from high school.
The Parent Trap star, 72, filed a motion on Friday, May 22, seeking to terminate his $13,750 monthly child support payments to his 18-year-old son Thomas and daughter Zoe, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY. Citing the terms of her 2018 divorce agreement with Buffington, 54, Quaid said the payments would end “once the child completes 12th grade” and would apply to both children on June 3.
Under the current arrangement, Mr. Quaid is required to pay Mr. Buffington an additional amount each year if his annual salary exceeds $1,314,000. In a recent filing, the actor requested that the potential bonus amount be prorated to his children’s graduation dates.
Quaid and Buffington married in July 2004.
After 12 years of marriage, Quaid and Buffington, a real estate broker, welcomed twins in November 2007. The two first filed for divorce in March 2012, but briefly mended their relationship a month later.
They broke up again in October 2012, and Buffington filed for legal separation, which was denied when they got back together the following year.
Buffington filed for divorce for a second time in 2016, but the former couple confirmed the reports at the time in a statement to TMZ, saying, “After careful consideration, we have decided to end our 12-year marriage. This decision was made amicably and with mutual respect. We remain great friends and devoted partners in raising our children.”
The divorce was finalized in 2018. According to a settlement agreement obtained by USA TODAY, the two will have joint legal and physical custody of Thomas and Zoe, with Buffington raising the children 75% of the time and Quaid raising 25% of the time to suit his “career and business schedule.”
Quaid also agreed to pay Buffington a $2 million “spousal support buyout,” an irrevocable lump sum in lieu of monthly payments, and a $1 million “equal installment” and half of the community property.
After their split, Quaid married his wife Laura Savoie, 33, in 2020, marking his fourth marriage. In addition to Buffington, he was married to actress PJ Soles from 1978 to 1983 and Meg Ryan from 1991 to 2001, with whom he had a son, Jack Quaid.
