The Milwaukee Bucks are reportedly looking for a new coach for the third time in recent seasons.
According to ESPN, Doc Rivers has resigned as Bucks coach. This comes after Milwaukee lost a 20-point loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday, April 12th, ending a disappointing season with a 32-50 record. According to ESPN, Rivers and the team are discussing a possible move to a front office advisory role.
After the loss, Rivers spoke to reporters as if an official announcement from the team was imminent.
“I can tell you we’re all on the same page,” Rivers said. “We’ve been talking about it, and we’d like to announce it pretty soon. I just want them to do it. It’s better that way. But I think you guys pretty much know.”
Rivers, who was officially inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026 just last week, will end his tenure in Milwaukee with a 97-103 record.
On Tuesday, April 7, Rivers hinted that he was strongly considering resigning.
Before Milwaukee’s eventual 96-90 loss to the Nets, Rivers was asked about his future and told reporters, “I can’t answer that, but I have grandchildren that I want to meet.” “That’s what I’ll say. I’ll let you figure it out from there.”
The Bucks failed to live up to expectations as the team dealt with an injury to star Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard’s torn Achilles tendon in the last playoff game. Milwaukee opted to waive Lillard in July 2025 to stretch out, suggesting something of a transition period for the roster.
Rivers replaced Adrian Griffin midway through the 2023-24 season. Griffin was in his first year coaching the Bucks, leading the team to a 30-13 record to open the season, but was fired after just 43 games. Although Rivers eventually took over, Milwaukee lost in the first round of the playoffs that season in six games to the rival Indiana Pacers.
Last season, the Bucs were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, again at the hands of Indiana.
It’s been a frustrating season for Milwaukee, who also had to face rumors swirling about Antetokounmpo’s future with the Bucks.
“Obviously it didn’t go the way I wanted it to,” Rivers said. “I always say I could have done a better job, I could have been healthier. But I’m not a big enough guy to look back. All I can do is look forward. We’ve done a lot to develop a lot of young players. Unfortunately, that’s kind of the role we were given and we did that.”
