President Trump’s deadline for Iran has passed. Instead, a ceasefire was established.
President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday night that he had reached a two-week ceasefire with Iran, after the United States threatened to destroy Iran’s energy and transportation infrastructure and wipe out “an entire civilization.”
what happened: The suspension came less than two hours before the 8 p.m. ET deadline set by President Trump. The president said the deal is conditional on Iran allowing crude oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, which is used to transport much of the world’s oil.
Politics: Some Republican lawmakers reprimanded President Trump ahead of the ceasefire announcement. That sparked a wave of lawmakers calling for the 25th Amendment to be invoked to remove President Trump.
Why are waterways so important? Approximately 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas supplies pass through this narrow strait.
