Getafe’s Abdel Abukar was sent off following a VAR review for grabbing Atletico Madrid striker Alexander Sorloth’s genitals during Saturday’s LaLiga match at the Metropolitano Stadium, shocking players and supporters alike.
The flashpoint occurred around the 55th minute when referee Miguel Ángel Ortiz stopped play after receiving a VAR warning and threatened a red card, causing the match to be suspended for several minutes.
The suspension initially puzzled those inside the stadium, as it followed a routine challenge between Nahuel Molina and Mauro Alambari, but there was nothing in the exchange to suggest a red card was imminent.
It only became clear when Ortiz checked the pitchside monitor and replays shown on the stadium’s big screens revealed an off-ball altercation between Soros and Abucar. The footage showed the Moroccan defender touching the Norwegian forward’s groin.
Thoros angrily grabbed Abukar’s arm and dragged him to the ground.
After reviewing the images, the referee straightly showed Abukal a red card for unsportsmanlike conduct, while Soros was shown a yellow card in response.
After a long delay, the match was ultimately decided by Molina’s first-half goal, with Diego Simeone’s side winning 1-0.
Atlético are third in La Liga with 57 points, six behind second-placed Real Madrid and 10 behind leaders Barcelona. Both rivals have matches scheduled.
