Britney Spears was arrested in California on suspicion of drunk driving and flouting the law.

The Grammy-winning pop star, 44, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol late Wednesday, March 4, in Ventura County on a charge of driving under the influence, according to Ventura County Sheriff’s Office inmate records reviewed Thursday by USA TODAY.

Spears was taken into custody around 3 a.m. Thursday and released just after 6 a.m., according to inmate records.

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and Spears for comment.

Spears’ arrest comes five years after her conservatorship, overseen by her father Jamie Spears, was terminated by a California judge in November 2021. Spears, who was 39 at the time of her sentencing, was placed under legal arrangement in 2008 at the age of 26 after a public lapse the year before, when paparazzi captured her seemingly erratic behavior.

Spears helped define pop music at the turn of the millennium with her hit songs and dazzling live performances, but she has largely retreated from the musical spotlight since her conservatorship ended. Her latest album “Glory” was released in 2016.

The “Baby One More Time” singer has released collaborative singles with Elton John (“Hold Me Closer”) and Black Eyed Peas rapper will.i.am (“Mind Your Business”) in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

On the touring circuit, Spears embarked on the Piece of Me Tour in 2018 after completing her 2017 Britney Piece of Me Las Vegas residency. The tour reportedly grossed $54.3 million and visited various cities in North America and Europe.

In an Instagram post in January, the Princess of Pop said she would “never” perform in the United States again due to “very sensitive reasons.”

“But I would love to sit on a stool with a red rose in my hair, put it up in a bun, and perform with my son…soon in England and Australia,” Spears added, without providing further details about potential concert appearances. “He’s a huge star and I’m so humbled to be standing in front of him!!! So fast, little guy!!!”
