Republican Sen. Steve Daines of Montana has announced that he will not seek reelection in the November midterm elections.

“After much consideration, I have decided not to seek re-election,” the Republican said in a video posted to X, adding that he was “grateful to serve alongside President Trump and my colleagues in the Senate.”

Daines, 63, represented Montana in 2013 in what was then the largest House seat, then moved to the Senate in 2015.

Republican Sen. Tim Sheehy, also from Montana, called Daines a “giant of Montana politics” in a post on X.

“Steve is doing something you don’t often see in modern politics: stepping down at the height of his power to make way for a new generation of leaders,” Shehey said.
