Jennifer Garner ‘always loves a little fight’

Jennifer Garner shares a rare inside look at how she and ex-husband Ben Affleck manage co-parenting.
In a new interview with Bustle, the “13 Going on 30” actress opened up about raising her family in “two separate households.” Affleck and Garner are both 53 years old and have three children, Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13. The two got married in 2005, but separated in 2018 after more than 10 years of marriage.
“I’m going to be mom and dad and he’s going to be dad and mom,” she told the outlet in an interview published Tuesday. “That can’t be helped, right? Because there’s no benefit to having both yin and yang living in the same house. So when raising a child, you have to incorporate a little bit of both.”
“There’s a little bit of a loss with that,” she told the outlet. “But there’s something to be gained from it.” Garner, who began dating businessman John C. Miller, said in a separate interview earlier this year that she was struggling with the gossip that dominated the tabloids after her breakup with Affleck.
“You have to be smart about what you can and cannot handle. And I couldn’t handle what was there. But what was there wasn’t difficult,” the actress told Marie Claire UK in January.
The “Last Thing He Told Me” star went on to say, “It was really hard to see my family break up. It was hard to lose that real partnership and friendship.”
Affleck later married and divorced Jennifer Lopez. He and Lopez originally met while working on the romantic comedy Gigli and got engaged in 2002, but called off their wedding in 2003 due to excessive media attention. The two have since married and broken up, with Lopez marrying Marc Anthony in 2004 and Affleck marrying Garner. Lopez also got engaged to Alex Rodriguez in 2019, but they didn’t end up getting married.
Nearly 20 years after their breakup, Affleck and Lopez rekindled their relationship in 2021 and married the following year. But in 2024, the “Jenny from the Block” singer filed for divorce from Affleck in Los Angeles Superior Court on their second wedding anniversary. Their divorce was finalized in January 2025.
