MILAN — Ilia Marin won the gold medal for Team USA.

Although the “God of the Quads” didn’t have a quad axel, he did a one-legged backflip that wowed the crowd and gave his home country a back-to-back team title. The United States and Japan advanced to the final program of the team competition with a tie for first place.

Marinin competed in the men’s team free skate on Sunday, February 8th. He decided to try a triple axel instead, but experienced a stumble that could change his fate. Instead, he powered through, setting off the night’s sequence with a quad Salchow and triple axel, followed by a stunning backflip that brought everyone to their feet.

The finish couldn’t have been more intense, with a combined score of 200.03 points, including 110.32 technical points and 89.71 component points. Japan’s Shun Sato finished the night with 194.86 points (technical score 106.49, component score 88.37), giving Japan the silver medal.
