  • In the third quarter of 2025, 39 states saw an increase in electric vehicle registrations.
  • Michigan had the largest increase in the number of EV registrations, increasing 4.8% from the previous year.
  • Through the first three quarters of 2025, EVs accounted for 10.6% of U.S. auto sales.

Electric vehicle registrations increased in 39 states in the third quarter of 2025 as consumers raced to buy electric vehicles before last year’s $7,500 U.S. tax credit for plug-in and hybrid models expired, according to new data released by the Automotive Innovation Alliance on February 2.

The alliance, which lobbies in Washington on behalf of nearly every major automaker including General Motors, Toyota and Volkswagen, said in its quarterly Get Connected report that EVs accounted for 10.6% of U.S. auto sales through the first three quarters of 2025, an increase of 0.6%. The group said Michigan had the largest increase in EV registrations from 2024 to the third quarter of 2025, increasing by 4.8%. The largest decline was in Hawaii, with a 3.8% decline.
