Tesla CEO Elon Musk told investors during the company’s January 28 earnings call that the company plans to prioritize its robot manufacturing plans and end production of its Model S luxury electric sedan and Model X luxury electric SUV this spring.

Musk said the company plans to convert space at its Fremont, Calif., factory, currently used to manufacture Model S and X vehicles, into an Optimus robot factory.

“I think it’s time to put an end to Model S and X with honorable termination,” Musk said on a live call with investors. “Because we are really moving into a future based on autonomy.”

Why is Tesla discontinuing Model S and Model X?

Tesla launched the Model S in 2013 and debuted the Model X in 2015.

The Model S in particular had a brief period of commercial success, but both cars have been overtaken by Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y in recent years.

“I’m a little sad, but it’s time to end the S/X program,” Musk told investors on a Jan. 28 conference call.

“This is part of our overall transition to an autonomous future,” he said. “Apart from the next generation Roadster, the only vehicles we will build will be self-driving cars.”

How did the Model S and Model X sell?

According to the website Goodcarbadcar.net, Tesla sold 9,199 Model S in 2025. The company sold 80,702 Model X units in 2025, according to its website.
