DHS Section Kristi Noem talks about Minnesota mass shooting
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told reporters she agreed with the White House’s view that Preti “committed an act of domestic terrorism.”
A day after calling on federal workers to leave Minneapolis, Democratic Sen. John Fetterman called on President Donald Trump to fire Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
As anger continues to mount on both sides of the aisle over immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis, a Pennsylvania lawmaker known for breaking ranks with Democrats took to social media on January 27 to plead with the president to remove Noem.
“I am appealing directly to the president to immediately remove @Sec_Noem from office,” Fetterman wrote in a social media post addressed to the president.
Fetterman’s post read, “Americans are dead.” “She betrays DHS’s core mission and undermines the legacy of border security. Don’t make the mistake of President Biden in not firing a totally incompetent DHS secretary.”
Fetterman appeared to be referring to former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, whom Republicans attempted to impeach in 2024. House Republicans argued that Mayorkas violated the Constitution by intentionally refusing to enforce border security laws. The article of impeachment was rejected in the Senate.
Fetterman said in a statement Monday, Jan. 26, that he will not vote this week to block the DHS funding bill, along with many Democrats. The effort, led by Senate Democrats, would risk a government shutdown unless Republicans come to the table to negotiate new legislation for the department that includes Democratic-backed oversight measures.
However, Fetterman said he supports separating the DHS bill from the six larger bills.
The senator has expressed support for Republican-backed immigration policies in the past, and was the first Democratic senator to support the Laken Riley Act, a border security measure that ultimately passed with bipartisan support.
