Protests erupt across the US over ICE immigration enforcement
The video of Renee Good’s shooting quickly went viral. Meanwhile, investigations by state and local authorities have been blocked by federal authorities.
An anti-immigration and customs enforcement protest in solidarity with the state of Minnesota is planned for Friday, January 23, in Los Angeles, organizers said, and the demonstration comes amid ongoing tensions between federal immigration authorities and communities across the country.
This comes days after a nationwide walkout was planned in protest of the Trump administration and previous protests over the Jan. 7 shooting death of Renee Nicole Good by ICE agents in Minneapolis.
Hundreds of Minnesota businesses are expected to close on Friday as part of statewide protests against the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement.
The Southern California rally will be held in downtown Los Angeles, with a march planned to the Metropolitan Detention Center on Alameda Street.
“We are witnessing a dangerous pattern of behavior by ICE agents across select communities across the country, enforcing the Trump administration’s distorted mandate,” CHIRLA Executive Director Angelica Salas said in a statement.
“These are not peacetimes, and all communities who want their neighborhoods to be free from these military operations and abuses should voice their discontent and join this national day of action to say ‘not in our name’ and ‘not on our watch,'” Salas said.
The Los Angeles demonstrations come as federal immigration enforcement agents continue to operate in Southern California. In early January, there were reports of ICE activity in the Fashion District, and on January 21, federal agents opened fire in Willowbrook, near Compton, in a “targeted operation.”
