At the end of the first year of President Donald Trump’s second term, Americans share their thoughts on his leadership.
President Donald Trump returned to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland late on Jan. 20 after the Air Force One crew identified a “minor electrical issue” after departing for Switzerland, the White House said.
The problem was discovered shortly after Air Force One took off for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said the plane was diverted out of an abundance of caution.
The White House said the plane landed at Joint Base Andrews at 11:07 p.m. ET. Shortly before midnight, President Trump boarded a small Air Force 1 jet for a visit to the World Economic Forum.
According to a pool reporter who was at the scene, “The original Air Force There was a commotion at the pool, some of them disembarking with luggage…The plane’s crew were quickly loading and unloading boxes of fruit, packaged sandwiches and drinks, and at least one person ran through the press room. Others outside the ground were seen unloading about a dozen suitcases from the plane and loading them onto a truck.
According to the U.S. Air Force, the presidential air transport aircraft consists of two specially configured Boeing aircraft that have been in use for decades. Boeing is working to develop a replacement, but Reuters reports that the plan has faced a series of delays.
In December 2025, the Air Force announced that delivery of the first of two new Boeing Air Force One jets would be delayed by another year to mid-2028.
Air Force One, the next-generation US presidential air transport aircraft that will convert two 747-8s into a specialized jet equipped with advanced communications and defense systems, will be delivered in 2028, four years behind schedule.
In May, the United States accepted a Boeing 747 luxury jetliner as a gift from Qatar. The White House asked the Air Force to quickly upgrade the gift for use as Air Force One.
