The Buffalo Bills announced on January 19 that they have fired Sean McDermott, who coached the team for nine seasons.

Buffalo’s decision didn’t sit well with one of its veteran defensemen, Jordan Phillips.

Phillips, a 33-year-old defensive tackle, took to his Instagram Story to express his displeasure with the team’s decision.

Phillips posted a caption above an image of a breaking news story about McDermott’s firing, writing, “The (expletive) here is so stupid.” “Honestly, it’s disgusting. He’s the best coach I’ve ever had.”

Phillips will know a thing or two about the coaching environment around the NFL. The 11-year veteran has bounced back since being selected in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, playing for five different NFL teams and six different full-time coaches.

Phillips had three two-season stints with the Bills and enjoyed his most productive NFL season (9.5 sack season in 2019) under the guidance of Coach McDermott.

Phillips was one of McDermott’s fans, but in a statement announcing the firing of the 51-year-old, Bills owner Terry Pegula said he believed the team needed a “new structure.”

“Sean has done an admirable job leading our football team over the past nine seasons,” the statement said. “But I feel like we need a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take this team to the next level. We owe it to our players and Bills Mafia.”

“Sean helped change the mindset of this organization and helped the Bills become a perennial playoff team. I respect all the work, loyalty and attention to detail he has shown for this team and this community.”
