Video game retailer GameStop is closing stores across the country, the USA TODAY Network site confirmed.

GameStop did not respond to multiple requests for comment from USA TODAY, but closures have been reported in states including Ohio, California and Alabama.

GameStop said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in March 2025 that it plans to close “an additional significant number of stores during fiscal year 2025,” which ends on January 31, 2026.

GameStop said in a document that a significant number of its customers are choosing to download games instead of physically purchasing them in stores.

“Current game consoles from Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft facilitate download technology,” GameStop wrote. “If consumers’ preference for downloading video game content instead of physical software continues to increase, our business and financial results could be adversely affected.”

At the time of the filing, GameStop said the company would close 590 stores in fiscal 2024 and operates 3,203 stores worldwide. The company previously announced plans to sell its French and Canadian operations.

As of February 1, 2025, GameStop had 2,325 stores in the United States, most of which are located in Texas.

The company also invested in Bitcoin, purchasing 4,710 Bitcoins worth over $443 million. According to a press release, the company invested in the digital currency for cash from May 3 to June 10.

Since stores began closing, an unofficial list of GameStop closings has been circulating online based on emails sent to customers and signs posted in stores.
