Kiefer Sutherland arrested on suspicion of altercation in Los Angeles

“Designated Survivor” actor Kiefer Sutherland was arrested early Monday morning, Jan. 12, and released on bail after an altercation with a rideshare driver in Los Angeles, law enforcement confirmed to USA TODAY.

Shortly after midnight on January 12, Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a radio call regarding an assault on a rideshare driver near Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in the Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to a statement provided by the LAPD to USA TODAY on Tuesday, January 13.

The 59-year-old actor is accused of breaking into a vehicle and assaulting the driver, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Sutherland also made criminal threats against the victim, which resulted in his arrest.

Police confirmed in a statement Tuesday that no injuries required medical treatment at the scene. USA TODAY has reached out to Sutherland’s representatives for comment.

Is Kiefer Sutherland in prison?

Sutherland was later released on $50,000 bail around 11:30 a.m. local time on Monday, Jan. 12, according to jail records reviewed by USA TODAY.

His first court hearing is scheduled for February 2nd at the Stanley Mosque Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles.

It was reportedly Sutherland’s first encounter with law enforcement in more than a decade. In 2007, he spent 48 days in jail after being convicted of drunk driving.

Who is Kiefer Sutherland?

Sutherland is a 59-year-old British-born Canadian actor turned country music singer-songwriter.

Sutherland is known for her television roles on “Designated Survivor” and “24,” and has recently appeared in the Netflix action thriller “Stone Cold Fox” and the holiday comedy “Tinsel Town.” Sutherland won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role as counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer on Fox’s “24.”

Other film credits include 1987’s “The Lost Boys” and 1986’s “Stand by Me.”

In the 2000s, he and musician Jude Cole founded their own record label, Ironworks. By 2016, he released his debut album, Down in a Hole, and pursued a career as a country singer.

“I love writing songs, I love playing songs, and nothing more. It’s not like I have any misplaced dreams. It’s just what I really love to do,” Sutherland told USA TODAY in 2023.
