Ole Miss struggles in rematch with Georgia
Experts break down why Georgia’s improved defense was able to shut down Ole Miss in the rematch.
There is no problem even if there are no lanes.
Thanks to Trinidad Chambliss’ historic second-half performance and Lucas Carneiro’s game-winning 47-yard field goal, No. 6 Mississippi won the shootout and upset No. 3 Georgia in the CFP Sugar Bowl quarterfinals on Thursday, Jan. 1, advancing to the CFP Fiesta Bowl semifinals.
And the Rebels did it all without their first-ever CFP berth coach in Lane Kiffin.
Chambliss completed 13 consecutive passes, setting a new Sugar Bowl record. That included two outrageous throws on a run to Kewan Lacy in the fourth quarter, but a down pass was incomplete at 6:19 of the fourth quarter. He completed 30 of 46 passes for 362 yards and two touchdown passes.
The Rebels’ five-point victory over the Bulldogs was the closest game in the CFP quarterfinals and the closest game in the 2025-26 College Football Playoff. The Rebels’ next opponent will be against No. 10 Miami in the CFP Fiesta Bowl semifinals on Thursday, January 8 at 7:30 p.m. ET at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Given the nature of the upset and the infamous fact that Kiffin left the Rebels before they qualified for the CFP, social media didn’t hesitate in making the decision to slam Kim Mulkey and the Tigers’ current coach, who spent all day watching the LSU women’s basketball team get upset by Kentucky.
