Nancy Pelosi hopes for the next female president
In an exclusive interview with USA TODAY’s Susan Page, Nancy Pelosi said she believes the next generation will have a female president.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi predicted in an interview with ABC News that aired on Dec. 28 that Democrats will regain the House majority in the 2026 midterm elections.
She told Jonathan Karl that Democrats need to reestablish parliamentary power when the party “takes control” of the chamber.
“Right now, Republicans in Congress have abolished Congress. They’re just doing what the president says they’re going to do. It’s going to end,” Pelosi said. “As soon as I get the gavel, it’s over.”
Pelosi, the first woman to become Speaker of the House, will leave the House at the end of her term. She said her successor as House Democratic leader, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, is ready to take the gavel.
“Hakeem Jeffries is prepared, eloquent, respected by our members, and a unifier,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi says Trump is responsible for impeachment
Pelosi told Kahl that if Democrats were to take office, they should not lead by saying, “Oh, we’re going to impeach President Donald Trump,” but should use subpoena power to get information from government agencies that are “not providing information right now.”
“I told people that the one person responsible for impeaching Donald Trump was Donald Trump. That’s not for you to decide. It’s what constitutional violations he committed,” she said.
Pelosi also said it was “clear” that President Trump “incited an insurrection” on January 6, 2021.
“What happened that day was horrific. It was an attack on the Capitol, a symbol of democracy for the world. It was an attack on Congress on a day that honors the constitutional responsibility of certifying the Electoral College to elect a president, and it was an attack on the Constitution of the United States,” she said.
Pelosi calls Americans ‘good people’ and focuses on victory in midterm elections
Pelosi said in an interview that she is focused on winning back the Democratic House by the end of her term in Washington.
But after she leaves office, she said, “I want to bring the debate to a place where I believe in the goodness of the American people.”
“By and large, Americans are good people, and I hope that our government and politics will get us back to a place where they understand that,” Pelosi said.
