A winter storm has battered parts of the Northeast and New England, with many Americans waking up to several inches of snow on the morning of December 27th.

Forecasters said the storm will bring colder-than-average temperatures and another round of snow and ice to the Northeast.

Meanwhile, heavy snow and strong winds affected atmospheric rivers in parts of California, with more than 4 feet of snow accumulating in some mountain areas. The event dumped several inches of rain and caused flooding in other parts of the state.

How much snow fell during the blizzard in the Tohoku region?

According to the National Weather Service, here’s how much snow fell in some parts of the Northeast in a 24-hour period.

  • Parrish, New York: 12 inches
  • New Milford, CT: 10.5 inches
  • Equinanque, Pennsylvania: 8 inches
  • Southampton, MA: 5.5 inches
  • Lyndhurst, New Jersey: 5 inches
  • Central Park, New York City: 4.3 inches

AccuWeather reports that the winter storm totals recorded in Central Park make this the largest winter storm for New York City so far this season and the highest snowfall in a storm since January 28-29, 2022, when 8.3 inches of snow fell.

In addition to snow, the storm brought more than a third of an inch of ice to parts of western Maryland and Pennsylvania, according to AccuWeather.

In the mountains of California, snow can be seen accumulating in atmospheric rivers

Heavy snow and high winds caused atmospheric rivers to flow through parts of California, creating dangerous travel conditions over the Sierra Nevada and mountain ranges as far north as California. Vehicles were stranded near Castle Peak in the Sierra Nevada on the summit of Donner Mountain on Christmas Eve and Christmas, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The amount of snow that fell is as follows.

  • Donor peak: 58 inches
  • Bear Valley: 55 inches
  • Soda spring: 42 inches
  • Tahoe City: 9.5 inches
