Most major retail chains in the United States will close on Christmas Day this year, Thursday, December 25, 2025. For those who leave their shopping until last, the message is clear. Almost all stores will be closed on the 25th.
This makes Christmas Eve (Wednesday, December 24th) the last important day to resolve pending gifts, buy last-minute food, and find clothing for family reunions. The good news is that many stores will be open 24 days, albeit with reduced hours.
Why is it important now? The 24th is your last chance.
Christmas week is usually forgotten in a hurry. Families, time-strapped workers, seniors, and especially those who rely on in-person shopping can avoid unnecessary travel on the 25th by planning well on the 24th.
Walmart: If you need to make last-minute purchases, Walmart will open on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, but close at 6 p.m. local time, the company confirmed to USA TODAY. All Walmart stores will close on Christmas Day, December 25th.
