President Donald Trump, who missed a deadline to release records related to sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, announced on December 24 that the process would take “several more weeks” after prosecutors discovered more than 1 million additional documents.

The Justice Department said through its official X account that New York-based federal prosecutors and the FBI had “discovered more than 1 million additional documents potentially related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.” The statement did not say when the documents were discovered.

The department, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, said the release “could take several more weeks” despite having attorneys “working around the clock” to remove information that could jeopardize the privacy of victims and accusers.

The administration has begun releasing files related to the criminal investigation into Epstein, the late American financier who was friends with Trump in the 1990s and early 2000s, to comply with a law passed by Congress last month.

Documents, photos, emails and other material released by the Justice Department and the House Oversight Committee feature Trump, former President Bill Clinton and numerous other VIPs. No one has been accused of wrongdoing by authorities in connection with Jeffrey Epstein.

Over fierce opposition from President Trump, Republicans and Democrats in Congress passed a disclosure law that would allow partial redactions to protect victims but require all documents to be made public by December 19th.

Previous announcements included extensive redactions that angered some Republicans and did little to defuse the scandal threatening the party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) slammed the delay on social media.

“The news on Christmas Eve about the ‘1 million more files’ dump only proves what we already know: President Trump is engaged in a massive cover-up,” Schumer said. “The questions Americans must answer are simple: What are they hiding and why? Justice delayed is justice denied. Open the file. Follow the law.”
