On Monday, December 22nd, a Mexican Navy plane crashed in fog in Texas while on a rescue mission to a group supporting child burn victims, killing five people, the country’s government announced.
Mexican officials said the plane, a King Air ANX 1209, was carrying four members of the Mexican Navy and four civilians when it crashed. The plane crashed in Galveston Bay, U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Luke Baker told USA TODAY.
According to the Mexican Navy, two people were recovered alive from the crash site and one person is missing.
Mexican naval officials said the plane was performing a specialized medical evacuation. The mission was carried out on behalf of the Michou and Mau Foundation, an organization that supports child burn victims, the Navy said.
In a statement on social media, the group expressed its sadness following the fatal accident.
“As the Michou and Mau Foundation, we express our deep solidarity with the families affected by these incidents,” the group said. “We honor the memory of those lost and share their pain with respect and compassion.”
The patient in the car was a 1-year-old child, the Associated Press reported. It is not immediately clear whether they survived.
U.S. Coast Guard officials who responded to the crash rescued six people and recovered two bodies, according to the Mexican Navy.
Baker deferred questions about the passenger’s status to the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA did not immediately respond to a request for information.
