Two teens who were shot while trying to steal packages from a home’s balcony are recovering, Atlanta police say.

On Dec. 11, around 3:40 p.m., officers responded to a shots fired call in the Adamsville neighborhood in west Atlanta.

Police said a 15-year-old man was in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his right leg, and a 16-year-old man was in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his right arm. Both teens were taken to Grady Hospital in stable condition.

At a news conference hours after the shooting, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schielbaum said officers believe the two teens were shot during a property crime. Police believe the teens tried to steal packages from the home, which is “not unusual” at this time of year, Schielbaum said.

What is porch piracy?

This practice, commonly referred to as porch piracy, leads to the theft of billions of dollars worth of goods and 104 million packages removed from shipping locations each year. Georgia ranks 8th in the nation for thefts by state.

Police said the homeowner, identified as 34-year-old Rakim Bradford, shot the teens to prevent theft.

Who was charged in the Atlanta shootings?

Bradford was taken into custody and later charged with two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during a felony, police said.

No charges have been announced against the teens, and their identities have not been identified.
