WASHINGTON – Vanity Fair magazine and its West Coast editor Olivia Nuzzi are parting ways after the publication of a political journalist’s controversial book sparked a new investigation into her allegedly unethical relationship with then-presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

“Vanity Fair and Olivia Nuzzi have mutually agreed that her contract expires at the end of this year in the best interest of the magazine,” a spokesperson for Nuzzi and the Condé Nast-owned magazine said in a joint statement to USA TODAY.

The split comes amid controversy surrounding Nuzzi, a former New York Magazine reporter, and Kennedy, who is now Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Donald Trump. The scandal first came to light in the fall of 2024, but new revelations in Nuzzi’s just-released tell-all book, American Cunt, brought it back to the attention of Washington officials.

In his book, Nuzzi provides fresh details about his relationship with an unknown politician widely known to be Kennedy. She said she told him she loved him even though the relationship became increasingly unethical. Nuzzi interviewed and profiled Kennedy as part of his work as a journalist. A representative for Kennedy, who is married to actress Cheryl Hines, had previously denied that there was any physical relationship between Kennedy and Nzee.

In September, long after the scandal became public knowledge, Vanity Fair hired Nuzzi as its West Coast editor. Nuzi said he felt ostracized from the political sphere in Washington, D.C., and had moved to Malibu, California.
