President Donald Trump has received a new honor: the FIFA Peace Prize.
On Dec. 5, FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented Trump with the inaugural award, which includes a trophy, medal, and certificate, while attending the 2026 World Cup draw at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
“We want to come together. That’s what we’ll do here today and what we’ll do at the World Cup, Mr. President,” Infantino said. “And you definitely deserve to receive the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize for your actions and what you have gained from it.”
President Trump has threatened to attack Venezuela in the future and has touted his peace record, saying he has resolved eight wars. While he called the FIFA Peace Prize “one of the great honors of my life,” it’s no secret that he had long hoped to win another Peace Prize – to become a Nobel Prize winner.
President Trump claims he will never win the Nobel Peace Prize
President Trump has long wanted to win the Nobel Peace Prize and has mocked and questioned why former President Barack Obama won the award in his first year in office. President Trump has said he is confident he won’t win no matter what, but many people are making noise about his nomination.
Days before the 2025 awards were announced, USA TODAY asked President Trump if he thought he would win the award.
“I don’t know…Marco would say we’ve solved seven wars, and we’re about to settle an eighth,” Trump said. A ceasefire between Hamas and Israel went into effect a few days later. “I don’t think anyone in history has settled as many, but maybe they’ll find a reason not to give it to me.”
Will he win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2026?
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was announced on October 10th, but the deadline for nominations was January 31st. The Nobel Committee will not reveal who has been nominated for the prize until 50 years later. Nominations can be submitted by anyone who meets the requirements, including members of national governments. Several world leaders had nominated him, but said the deadline was after 2025. That means he could be considered in 2026.
On June 20, Pakistani leaders announced they would nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his “determined diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership in the recent India-Pakistan crisis.” India did not give credit to the United States for the ceasefire.
In a June 24 letter, Republican lawmakers named Trump a supporter of the Iran-Israel ceasefire after the United States joined Israel in bombing Iran.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said in July that he had nominated Trump for the award. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said he supported Trump’s award at a White House ceremony in August.
In a letter posted on social media in August, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in establishing a ceasefire with Thailand. The nomination was supported by thousands of Cambodian Buddhist monks who took part in a peace march in the immediate aftermath.
Who will win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025?
The 2025 award went to Venezuelan opposition activist Maria Colina Machado. She thanked President Trump “for his unwavering support of our cause.”
But Trump’s team wasn’t satisfied.
“The Nobel Committee has proven that it prioritizes politics over peace,” White House communications director Stephen Chan wrote on social media.
According to the organization, there were 338 candidates for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. Of these, 244 were individuals and 94 were organizations.
