At least a handful of Thanksgiving shoppers were disappointed when they went to prepare the holiday staple cranberry sauce last week and found their Ocean Spray cans didn’t contain sauce, but water instead.

“We are aware of several reports of cans containing water instead of cranberry sauce and are investigating how this happened,” Ocean Spray said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Millions of families enjoyed cranberry sauce this holiday season, and it matters to us even if one can of sauce doesn’t live up to expectations.”

The company has come under fire for allegedly defrauding customers during the holiday season. A video posted to TikTok on Saturday, Nov. 29, shows a person opening three cans of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce to reveal water. One of the cans had been opened on camera. This viral video has been viewed over 10 million times.

In another video posted to Facebook on Friday, Nov. 28, a customer complained that he bought four cans of cranberry sauce with jelly, but only opened them to find water.

“This is my Ocean Spray cranberry sauce from yesterday… 4 cans… Has anyone else done this?” a customer wrote. One of the cans was opened using an electric can opener in front of the camera.

Ocean Spray inspires customers to “solve their problems”

More and more customers have visited Ocean Spray’s website and left complaints that they purchased cans of sauce that were filled with water.

“I opened two cans of clean water,” one person wrote. “I’ve had this since I was a kid and I was so upset because I didn’t have the sauce for Thanksgiving.”

The company said it has reached out to the individual who shared the video “to learn more and make it right.”

Ocean Spray did not provide additional information about the incident.
