Counting down to Christmas is fun, but it’s even more fun with an advent calendar. Or two.
The exact person behind the concept is unknown, but Sky History says the tradition of marking the days until Christmas likely began in Germany in the 19th century.
In recent years, advent calendars have become even more popular because they offer surprises. Traditional advent calendars usually include chocolate, wine, cookies, or ornaments, and each year brands compete to create the most appealing one.
We’ve rounded up advent calendars from major retailers like Target, Trader Joe’s, and Aldi.
trader joe’s
Trader Joe’s offers a variety of advent calendars, including:
- chocolate advent calendar – $1.49
- 12 days of beauty – A curated collection: According to Trader Joe’s, this set, which retails for $19.99, includes “a rotating assortment of skin and hair products, everything from body butters and facial oils to masks, balms and creams.”
- dog and cat advent calendar – $7.99

Aldi’s Advent Calendar range for the 2025 holiday season is a mix of old and new favorites, with over 30 unique items included in this year’s range.
- Fun Moments 12 Days of Crafting ($7.99): Available in two variations: snowman and sledding, this kit lets your family assemble 12 unique festive-themed ornaments.
- Kirkton House Candle Advent Calendar ($34.99): A gorgeous collection of 25 candles. Each offers a different festive scent.
- Winter Wonderland Cheese Advent Calendar ($16.99): This pack includes a wide variety of cheeses sourced from around the world, including Whiskey Cheddar and Bruschetta Gouda.
- Winter Wonderland Wine Advent Calendar ($59.99): The 24-day Wine Advent Calendar includes a selection of great wines from around the world.

Aldi’s advent and holiday calendars are available at Aldi stores in 38 states, subject to availability, with in-store pickup options available. You can also order online and have it delivered. Supplies of advent calendars are limited and Aldi says it may limit the number of certain calendars purchased per person. A full list of Aldi’s advent calendars can be found on the supermarket chain’s website.

Target has “all your advent calendar needs” covered, the retailer says, with a brand lineup that includes decorations, toys, pets and beauty products, as well as some “lovely classics.”
