Experience what it’s like to ride a Waymo robotaxi
Waymo operates self-driving robotaxis in the Phoenix area.
Tesla Inc TSLA.O Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said on Tuesday that the number of robotaxis in Austin, Texas, would double in December, following the rollout of self-driving services in the city in June.
“Austin’s Tesla robotaxi fleet should roughly double in the next month,” Musk said in a post on his company X.
It wasn’t immediately clear how many robotaxis Tesla operates.
Tesla’s robotaxi service currently operates in two cities, Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area, but vehicles are still required to have safety monitors. Last week, the company also received permission to operate a ride-hailing service in Arizona.
Musk said in October that he expected robotaxis to operate without safety drivers in much of Austin this year and eight to 10 metropolitan areas by the end of the year.
He said in July that he expected Tesla’s robotaxis to serve about half of the U.S. population by the end of the year.
Tesla Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. AMZN.O Inc.’s Zoox Inc. are accelerating their expansion as the robotaxis industry rebounds after years of broken promises and shutdowns due to high costs, strict regulations and federal investigations.
