How Europe’s talent can secure a €1 trillion AI economy injection

Date:

A €1.2 trillion AI prize is at stake for the European economy, and the region has the talent and raw materials to capture it.

While the global narrative often focuses on competition with the US and China, from the perspective of Europe, we see a region with untapped potential, world-class talent and deep infrastructure investment.

Debbie Weinstein, president of Google EMEA, sees a “new generation of visionary founders” poised to lead the region’s future. This opportunity is built on a foundation of scientific excellence and a workforce that is “the best anywhere in the world.”

The challenge now is to leverage Europe’s strengths to close the AI adoption gap and accelerate growth.

Foundation for innovation

Europe is already a powerhouse of scientific progress. The Google DeepMind team, which includes Nobel Prize winners, drives discovery from London, and nearly 1 million researchers across EMEA use AlphaFold to solve biological problems. Europe is not starting from scratch. It is a center of high-level research and development.

That intellectual capital is funded by hard investments. Just last week, Google announced it would invest €5.5 billion in Germany to support connectivity and infrastructure.

The choice to base our ‘Security Operations Centers’ in Munich, Dublin and Malaga also highlights the uniquely European strength of our deeply culturally ingrained approach to privacy and security. For companies, this shows that Europe offers a stable and secure environment in which to build long-term digital strategies.

The potential of AI in Europe

Currently, only 14% of European companies are using AI. While some see this as a lag, optimists see it as significant room for growth. Companies that have implemented these tools are seeing strong results.

Weinstein pointed to Spanish startup Aidven as a prime example of Europe’s potential. They are leveraging AI to help doctors detect heart disease earlier, proving that European founders can build solutions that change the world if they have access to the right tools.

The operational benefits are similarly visible in traditional sectors. In the automotive industry, upgrading from basic voice assistants to AI copilots can detect driver fatigue and prevent accidents. In cybersecurity, modern tools allow teams to stay ahead of advanced threats. The technology acts as a force multiplier, giving businesses “the most powerful toolbox ever.”

To fully realize this €1.2 trillion potential, European businesses need access to the same high-performance AI models as businesses around the world. The latest model is 300 times more powerful than the model from two years ago, significantly increasing the productivity of users who can deploy it.

There is positive momentum on the regulatory front. Weinstein noted that the release of the commission’s digital omnibus is a “step in the right direction” to help companies compete globally.

The goal now is harmony. Create a clearer, simpler structure that allows companies to responsibly train models and launch products faster. A unified market with clear and sensible rules will be the catalyst to convert potential into GDP.

investment in workforce

The final piece of the puzzle is people. Seizing this moment requires employees who have the confidence to take advantage of it. Weinstein emphasizes the need for leaders who can identify opportunities and managers who are knowledgeable about AI.

We achieve this through partnerships. Google has already helped more than 15 million Europeans learn digital skills and is currently deploying a €15 million AI Opportunity Fund to support vulnerable workers. For company leaders, the message is clear. Investing in your skills today gives you the confidence to take risks and grow tomorrow.

Europe has the talent, the values and the infrastructure. By focusing right on skills and promoting harmonized access to tools, Europe is well placed to lead the way and maximize the value of the AI era.
