The president announced on his social media platform Truth Social that the two men will meet in the Oval Office of the White House on November 21.
Has Mamdani given the court back to the Democrats?
New York City Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani’s campaign centered on affordability. That resonated with young voters.
President Donald Trump announced late on November 19 that he would meet with Zoran Mamdani, a democratic socialist and the next mayor of Trump’s hometown of New York City.
“Communist New York City Mayor Zoran ‘Kwame’ Mamdani has requested a meeting. It has been agreed that this meeting will be held in the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st,” the president said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social. “Details will be announced later!”
President Trump’s announcement of the summit came weeks after Mamdani defeated former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who lost the primary and ran as an independent in the general election, on Nov. 4. The president has repeatedly criticized Mamdani, a 34-year-old former state lawmaker and Muslim who, like Trump, hails from Queens.
Mamdani spokeswoman Dora Pekek confirmed the two men would meet, saying, “As is customary for incoming mayoral administrations, the mayor-elect will be meeting with the president in Washington to discuss public safety, economic security, and the affordability agenda that more than 1 million New Yorkers voted for just two weeks ago.”
“I think the mayor of New York wants to meet with us and we’ll work something out, but he wants to come to Washington,” Trump told reporters on Nov. 16. “We want to see everything go well for New York.”
Mamdani’s spokesperson previously said the mayor-elect wants to discuss affordability issues in the city with the president. Mamdani promised to make New York more affordable.
“We are seeing his actions and the actions of the Washington administration have diametrically opposed effects for New Yorkers,” Mamdani said in a statement. “Frankly, I’m going to tell the president and others that these things need to change to make it easier for New Yorkers and Americans to get everyday necessities.”
Trump’s first comments after Mamdani’s election showed his distaste for New York City’s new leader.
“On November 5, 2024, the American people took back their government,” President Trump said at a business forum in Miami, Florida, the day after the election. “We have regained our sovereignty. We lost a little sovereignty last night in New York, but we will deal with it. Don’t worry.”
