How Levi Strauss is leveraging AI for its DTC-first business model

Date:

Levi Strauss is incorporating AI and cloud platforms into its core business as it pursues a direct-to-consumer (DTC)-first business model.

The nearly 175-year-old apparel company is leveraging Microsoft technology to modernize the consumer experience and increase internal productivity. Levi Strauss’ approach provides case studies of other companies using integrated technology stacks to address specific commercial objectives.

AI “super agents”: Levi Strauss’ integrated front end for business

A central element of this effort is the development of agent-based AI solutions. Levi Strauss deploys an Azure-native “orchestrator agent” embedded within Microsoft Teams that acts as a “super agent.”

This agent serves as a single conversation portal for employees across corporate, retail, and warehouse environments. On the operational side, we respond to employee questions and route them to specialized sub-agents behind the scenes. Some of them are already in place. This shows the integration of employee tools. Instead of training staff on multiple applications, agents provide a single interface to streamline workflow.

This AI-centric business model is part of a broader goal outlined by Levi Strauss & Co’s chief digital and technology officer, Jason Gowans.

“We are reinventing Levi Strauss & Co as a DTC-first, fan-centric retailer, making every interaction faster, smarter and more personal,” Gowans said. “AI is at the center of this, helping us drive innovation, increase employee creativity, unlock productivity, and deliver connected, memorable experiences that keep fans coming back for more.”

This focus on productivity extends to the developer side as well. The team uses GitHub Copilot for major projects including quality engineering and release management. At the same time, other employees are equipped with Microsoft Surface Copilot+ PCs. Employee feedback indicates that these devices lead to increased speed and data processing, and features such as Copilot keys reduce the time it takes to search for information.

Basic cloud and security posture

Levi Strauss’ AI implementation is based on prerequisite infrastructure work. For business leaders, this highlights that advanced AI models require an integrated cloud environment.

As part of a broader digital initiative, Levi Strauss uses Microsoft Azure to migrate application workloads from on-premises data centers. The company used Azure Migrate and GitHub Copilot to plan and execute the consolidation of its private data center environment.

This cloud infrastructure is also the center of a company’s security system. Levi Strauss leverages Azure AI Foundry and semantic kernels to build intelligent automation capabilities.

Security is integrated into the AI framework itself, and tools are used to power security agents and policy orchestration. This approach allows Levi Strauss to continue expanding its AI-driven efforts across its global operations while maintaining its zero trust security model.

To manage new hardware endpoints, the company also uses Microsoft Intune for zero-touch device onboarding and application deployment.

Transform your business model by fully leveraging the AI ecosystem

Levi Strauss’ work demonstrates an ecosystem-based approach to AI adoption. Rather than deploying separate tools in stages, the company is integrating AI agents, developer tools, and new hardware on a common cloud platform.

Keith Mercier, vice president of worldwide retail and consumer goods industry at Microsoft, said Levi Strauss “exemplifies how iconic brands can reinvent themselves with cloud and AI technology.”

For other companies, the Levi Strauss case study serves as a blueprint for directly linking AI and foundational cloud migration to high-value outcomes, such as converting to a DTC business model.
