As the city of Charlotte, North Carolina prepares for a surge in immigration raids, a large number of federal immigration agents could arrive in Charlotte, North Carolina, as early as Saturday, November 15, the local sheriff announced in a statement.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry L. McFadden said he was told by two separate federal officials this week that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents would arrive in the Charlotte area “as early as this Saturday or early next week.”

McFadden said federal officials have not released specific details about the operation, including how many officers will be sent to the city or what their mission will be. The sheriff added that his agency “does not participate in any enforcement actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and CBP.”

In response to a question about anticipated operations, Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, said, “We are not discussing future operations or potential operations.”

The development comes as the Trump administration expands the deployment of federal agents to Democratic-run cities across the country, including Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Memphis, Chicago and Portland.

The deployment of federal agents and the National Guard has been challenged in court, drawing scrutiny over what officials see as their use of force and increasingly aggressive tactics.

The planned operation in Charlotte also comes amid reports that officials have departed from Chicago, which has become a flashpoint in President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign.

“We’re not leaving Chicago,” McLaughlin said on the X show this week, in response to reports of a rollback in immigration enforcement in the nation’s third-largest city.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles (D) said local officials don’t know what immigration officials are planning and urged residents to remain calm.

“We understand that this news brings uncertainty and anxiety to many people in our community,” she said in a statement. “Everyone in our community deserves to feel safe, and I will do everything in my power to keep our community informed and make sure everyone feels safe and knows their rights.”
