Skim through Wednesday’s top stories:
welcome to the house
House Speaker Mike Johnson has ordered lawmakers to return to the Capitol within 36 hours (hopefully) by Wednesday after the Senate’s final vote on a spending package to end the longest government shutdown in history.
What’s next: If the bill passes both houses of Congress, it will be sent to President Donald Trump, who earlier this week expressed support for the deal brokered by lawmakers.
- What is the contract? It reverses layoffs for thousands of federal workers, restarts essential services and includes some eyebrow-raising proposals like cannabis regulations.
- How is healthcare for Americans? The bipartisan agreement does not end the rapidly increasing costs for the millions of Americans enrolled in the Affordable Care Act. Many people will need to switch to Obamacare plans, which offer less generous benefits.
- What about food aid? The Supreme Court on Tuesday again rejected an order directing the Trump administration to fully fund SNAP food benefits, giving Congress time to resolve pending agreements.
Air travel is in danger
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy promised Tuesday that if the government doesn’t move quickly to reopen, the flight delays and disruptions that American travelers have experienced so far will be considered “minor.” Duffy wasn’t sure how long it would take for the airport to return to normal operations if the government reopened. The secretary warned that it will be difficult to fly much earlier than Thanksgiving.

Will Americans cancel Black Friday?
“We don’t see this battle as left versus right. We see it as top and bottom. This is about Black Friday, because honestly, what we’re seeing across the board is unsustainable. We’re being taken advantage of. Prices are going up. Inflation is through the roof.”
~ Carlos Alvarez Alaños, Founder of American Opposition. Part of a coalition of grassroots organizations calling for a nationwide economic shutdown during the holiday shopping season, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Organizers told USA TODAY they are asking Americans to cancel streaming and digital subscriptions, as well as avoid travel and restaurants.
The surprising connection between coffee and your soul
Drinking just one cup of joe may reduce the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AFib). Atrial fibrillation is a common form of abnormal heartbeat that causes the heart to beat and can lead to blood clots, stroke, or heart failure. This is the result of the new DECAF (Does Eliminating Coffee Avoid Fibrillation?) study, which aims to find out how coffee affects people with arrhythmia. Your coffee habit may have surprising health benefits.
