Dick Cheney’s funeral date, time and location set

Date:

The funeral for former US Vice President Dick Cheney has been decided.

The former politician and businessman passed away at the age of 84 on November 3, surrounded by his family, his family announced. Cheney died of complications from pneumonia and cardiovascular disease, his family said.

Cheney served as vice president under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, and was considered one of the most powerful vice presidents in U.S. history, largely responsible for leading the push for the invasion of Iraq in 2003. In a statement released after Bush’s death, he said Cheney was “the person I needed” as vice president and a “calm and steady presence in the White House amidst great national challenges.”

Cheney survived five heart attacks, multiple surgeries, and a heart transplant during his lifetime. He is survived by his wife, Lynn, and two daughters, Mary and Liz.

Here’s what we know, including the location and date of his funeral.

Would Dick Cheney lie to the nation?

It is not yet known whether Mr. Cheney will receive a state funeral. Those who receive a state funeral are laid to rest in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The day after Cheney’s death, Senate Minority Leader John Thune (R.S.D.) said Republican leadership staff was considering “protocols” regarding the possibility of Cheney lying in state, The Hill reported.

Like past presidents and other prominent politicians, Cheney may receive a state funeral. For example, Alaska Representative Don Young, the longest-serving Republican member in the history of the U.S. House of Representatives, died on March 18, 2022, and days later, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she would lie publicly.
