A look back at Dick Cheney’s controversial political achievements
USA TODAY’s Washington bureau chief Susan Page looks back on the political accomplishments of Dick Cheney, who has died at the age of 84.
Dick Cheney, one of the most powerful and controversial vice presidents in American history, died on November 3 at the age of 84, prompting tributes from American politicians.
Former Republican and Democratic presidents and vice presidents have released messages of condolence for Cheney. Notably, neither former President Barack Obama nor President Donald Trump have commented on Cheney’s death as of 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Former Vice Presidents Dan Quayle and Al Gore, as well as current Vice President J.D. Vance, also have not commented on Cheney’s death.
Cheney, a former vice president under President George W. Bush, was a central figure in America’s response to the September 11, 2001, attacks and helped lead the push to invade Iraq based on intelligence (later proven false) that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction.
Here’s how everyone has reacted to Cheney’s death so far.
