  • The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is incredibly efficient and has a large gas tank.
  • Its final configuration is a premium, fuel-feeding daily driver.

Do you find yourself spending too much money on gas too often?

Gasoline prices have increased significantly in recent years. For those who drive cars with poor fuel efficiency, these price hikes may be a major monthly expense. Fortunately for consumers, some automakers are designing their vehicles with fuel economy and carbon emissions in mind.

USA TODAY Cars tested the 2025 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, one of the most efficient cars on the market. It’s impressive how little fuel this Korean midsize sedan consumes per week.

What makes the 2025 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid stand out?

After using the 2025 Sonata Hybrid Limited for a few days, it was clear that we weren’t going to put a dent in the fuel gauge during our test period. In today’s economy, filling up the tank can be a frustrating experience, and the Sonata Hybrid limits that experience. While the 2025 Sonata Hybrid has some appealing attributes, this midsize sedan is actually designed for drivers who appreciate good fuel efficiency.

How do you drive?

Performance, usability and efficiency

The 2025 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor that produces 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. On the highway, it has crisp acceleration that excites drivers, making it fun to drive. Fully flooring the accelerator (within legal speed limits) dispels any preconceived notions of how such an efficient vehicle should feel.

Its handling isn’t particularly impressive, but its efficiency is surprising for non-hybrid drivers. The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid gets a whopping 47 miles per gallon combined. Multiply that by the 13.2-gallon tank and you get up to 620 miles of range on a full tank. After using the Sonata Hybrid for a full week, I barely lost a quarter of a tank of gas despite trips to the park, runs to Costco, and even daily driving.

What’s it like inside?

INTERIOR, TECHNOLOGY AND COMFORT

USA TODAY Cars tested a Sonata Hybrid Limited that came standard with leather seating and ambient lighting. This trim also features a standard leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

The Limited model also comes standard with a surround view monitor and blind spot view monitor, making lane changes and parking easier and safer. Includes wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The interior of the 2025 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited is noticeably more sophisticated, especially compared to the lower trims. It has a solid value proposition if you value creature comforts and technology.

Will it fit your lifestyle?

Load capacity, space, practicality

The 2025 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has 46.1 inches of front seat legroom and 34.8 inches of rear seat legroom. It feels spacious as it can seat about 5 people. The midsize hybrid sedan has 15.6 cubic feet of cargo space, which is plenty for hauling groceries.

If you have a small family and don’t need the space and practicality of a small SUV, the Sonata Hybrid can accommodate your lifestyle. If you’re a driver who regularly picks up a few passengers, you can get the job done. This hybrid can serve as a daily driver for those with long commutes, as well as a road trip vehicle that can cover long distances before refueling.

Is it worth it?

price, value, competitors

Pricing for the 2025 Sonata Hybrid starts at $31,250 with SEL trim. Drivers can upgrade to the Limited final configuration ($37,700) for better interior and technology features.

After testing the Sonata Hybrid Limited, its pricing seems justified, but drivers can also opt for the less refined and less technologically advanced SEL to save money. Edmunds praised the hybrid’s “spacious interior, high fuel economy, and convenient standard technology features.”

The Sonata Hybrid competes with the Toyota Camry, the best-selling midsize sedan that recently became a hybrid-only nameplate. Honda’s Accord Hybrid is also a formidable opponent. Toyota’s midsize hybrid is the most affordable of the three. It’s also the most efficient (51 miles per gallon combined) and most powerful (225 horsepower). Hyundai’s models are competitive, but not clear segment leaders.

Who should buy the 2025 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid?

final verdict

Hyundai’s midsize hybrid sedan is a great choice for drivers who plan to travel with multiple passengers on a regular basis. Its hallmark is good fuel economy, but its design language is also pleasing. This hybrid car has a modern look and a cabin packed with great technology.

If you’re looking for a midsize sedan that can go an incredible distance on a single tank of gas, the 2025 Sonata Hybrid is definitely one of the best options right now. The Limited trim proves that the Korean brand can also cater to drivers who enjoy something more premium.
