Several Outback Steakhouse restaurants across the U.S. are serving the last of their Bloomin’ Onions.

Parent company Bloomin’ Brands has closed several locations across the United States, including at least two restaurants in Florida. Bloomin’ Brands opened its first Outback in 1988 in Tampa, Florida.

Bloomin’ Brands operates more than 1,450 restaurants across the U.S., including more than 670 Outback Steakhouses, according to its most recent quarterly report filed Aug. 7. These recent closures are the first in about 20 months since Bloomin’ Brands closed 41 restaurants in February 2024, with Outback Steakhouse restaurants accounting for the majority of closures.

Bloomin’ Brands’ restaurant portfolio also includes Carrabba’s Italian Grill (more than 200 locations in the U.S.), Bonefish Grill (more than 160 locations), and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine (more than 60 locations). The company operates more than 350 restaurants in other countries, primarily Brazil and South Korea.

Bloomin’ Brands spokeswoman Elizabeth Daley told USA TODAY in a statement that employees who worked at the closed restaurant will be given the opportunity to work at a nearby restaurant if possible.

The stores were closed after a regular review, she said, adding: “These are business decisions that are part of our ongoing turnaround plan.”

“We considered a variety of factors, including sales, traffic, trade area, and the potential for investment to improve performance,” Daly said.
