AI migration from Nvidia to Huawei: Opportunities and tradeoffs

Date:

When considering migration, several business benefits may guide your final decision. Reliance on one large vendor (Nvidia) can introduce risks such as pricing impacts, export controls, supply shortages, and single points of failure for innovation. Adopting or migrating to Huawei could provide negotiating leverage, avoid vendor lock-in, and provide access to alternative supply chains. This is particularly relevant in regions where Nvidia faces export restrictions.

If an organization operates in a region where the Huawei ecosystem is stronger (e.g., China, parts of Asia) or where domestic incentives favor local hardware, a move to Huawei may align with corporate strategy. For example, ByteDance has started training new models primarily using Huawei’s Ascend 910B chip with notable success.

Because Huawei’s technology focuses on inference and large-scale deployment, it may be better suited for long-term use than occasional use of large-scale infrastructure for training, followed by less intensive inference. If your organization’s workloads are inference-heavy, the Huawei stack may offer cost and power advantages. Huawei’s mobile internal clusters (such as CloudMatrix) have shown competitive results in some benchmarks.
